The Up & Down

In this mixed media series, Sofia uses an abstract approach to express deep emotions brought up, during, and around her multi-focal epilepsy. The isolation. The “wasted days.” The lost time.

Across countless EEGs, when friends come and go, when times get harsh, art always seems to be a safe space to land on. It’s a place to express the sometimes-chaotic ups and downs of the feelings that come with this diagnosis.

As an artist, this is how Sofia reaches for connection. Her work has not always been abstract, and it may change in style from time to time, but so do we as people. One thing remains the same: her yearning to release and connect through paint, paper, and canvas.
